The dark figure in this work represents a sense of internal corruption resulting in a desire to return to emptiness, purity or innocence represented by the light figure. The background symbolizes life experiences that have had a corrupting influence on our sense of self. The white figure reaching forwards represents empty desires or those of a spiritual nature such as the desire for higher truth and love. As a result there is a sense of internal struggle with the light self unable to progress held back by the dark self.
